Silent Noise Documentation

Helping you get a hang of what exactly is going on.

Welcome to the Silent Noise documentation. This page should help you familiarize yourself with the Silent Noise theme and how to use it.

Visual Effects & Graceful Degradation

Silent Noise was designed with modern technologies in mind. Many effects were used to offer visual appeal. Most of these effects are capable of “graceful degradation” – that is, if a technology is not supported, the effect will not adversely affect the rest of the page.

CSS3 is used extensively. Most modern browsers, like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, are capable of displaying these advanced effects.

Internet Explorer 6 is not supported – Silent Noise is not tested with this browser, nor was it designed with the limitations of this outdated browser in mind.

Theme Options

Silent Noise comes pre-configured for you, with minimal settings for you to mess with. The theme offers very few options outside of the main site color options, which let you define a color to be used site-wide.

When selecting a color, we recommend you use one of the pre-defined color choices. If you feel these colors do not appeal to you, however, you have the option of entering your own hex color choice.

The best color choices are usually brightly colored ones. The chosen color is subdued dramatically due to the gradients in place, and in other places where the color only peeks through lightly darker colors may not look as visually appealing.

We highly recommend you use a color picker – Culrr for example – and to test your colors to determine the best choice. Monochromatic colors may not look appealing as the rest of Silent Noise has been designed mono-chromatically to compliment the color choice.

Custom Logos

Silent Noise offers a custom logo functionality, allowing you to place your own logo in the header. We feel this is the best method of customization beyond color and do not recommend users make changes beyond it, as it may affect visuals negatively.

To use a custom logo, upload the 60px by 60px logo to your server and place the URL in the text field in the Theme Options page where marked. Please note that a light colored box will still appear after the placement of the logo. This box is also present when no logo is available.

Using Page Redirections

Silent Noise offers a Page Redirect feature to redirect pages. By utilizing this feature, you can have a page redirect to any URL of your choice, whether that be on your website of off-site. A “Photos” page that redirects to Flickr, for example, is a good utilization of this feature.

To redirect, add a new page in the specified location of your choice. Note that this page will still be visible on the top navigation bar. Next, add a custom field. The custom field box is usually located right below the edit box on the Write Page page in the WordPress admin. The custom field should have a name of “redirect”. For the value, enter the URL of the website you would like to redirect to.

Finally, you must set the page template. Usually located on the right hand side of the Write Page page, the Attributes box houses the “Template” option. Select “Page Redirect”, and then Update / Publish the page.
